PITTSBURG, Kan. – Paced by individual titles from
Quin Johnson,
Dennis Kipngeno,
Preston Whaley,
Leonardo Ledgister, and
Erika Snyder in addition to a pair of 4x400 relay victories, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi indoor track and field squad kicked off its spring setting a slew of personal bests at the Crimson & Gold Invitational on Saturday.
The Islanders opened competition with a sweep of the 5000m events, as Johnson won and set a personal best time of 17:39.51 while Kipngeno followed with his own title after turning in a personal-best 14:36.39 effort.
Multiple Islanders set personal bests in the 5000m, as
Tristan Stellmach crossed the finish a line a second behind Kipngeno to complete the 1-2 punch while
Juan Salinas III (15:32.35) and
Andrew Gandy (15:47.34) set new career marks.
Moving to the 60-meter hurdles,
Timor Barrett (8.21) and Ke'tavion Humber (8.30) finished nine seconds apart to earn second and third distinctions for the Islanders. Humber's time matched his career best in the event.
Devon Polk took fourth for the women in the same event with a 9.14 time.
Yasmine Steele and
Larissa Manciaz turned in another 2-3 placement for the Islanders in the 400-meter dash, with Steele's 57.86 mark ranking fourth all time. The men found similar success, pulling off a 1-2-3 sweep led by Ledgister's 47.99 time while Barrett and Humber recorded narrow 48.49 and 48.57 finishes, respectively.
The women's high jump resulted in another Islander champion as Snyder clinched the victory along with a personal best with a 1.69m leap.
Preston Whaley provided a standout effort in the men's triple jump category, lifting 14.30m to add to the Islanders' title haul. The Islanders also landed a top-three finisher in the long jump as
Sergio Alcorta placed third with a 6.67m leap.
A&M-Corpus Christi finished on a high note, garnering yet another event sweep in the 4x400 relays. The women's quartet of
Makalah Griffin,
Jadyn Wagner, Steele, and Manciaz defeated the competition by a nearly three-second margin with a 3:52.87 time. On the men's side, Humber,
Keenan Lawrence, Barrett, and Ledgister clocked in at 3:14.71 to take the win by nearly a second and rank second in program history.
The freshman pair of
Deon McIver and Wagner turned in impressive debut performances, as McIver finished eighth in the 60-meter dash with a 7.04 mark while Wagner ran a 58.66 in the 400-meter for a fourth-place spot.
Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi returns to the track on Friday, Feb. 19 at the Texas Tech Matador Invitational.
