INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi had five teams earn the
Public Recognition Award for academic excellence from the NCAA on Wednesday afternoon. The award recognizes the Islanders women's golf, women's tennis, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball and women's cross country teams for scoring in the top 10 percent of all programs in the country. The Public Recognition Award is based on the most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rates for each team.
Nearly 1,400 teams from 326 Division I schools were recognized for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rates. In all, 1,380 teams earned the recognition, largely as a result of perfect scores.
"We are proud of these student-athletes and coaches for setting the standard for academic success with perfect APR scores for the second year in a row," Director of Athletics
Jon Palumbo said. "These scores and our overall academic success reflect the commitment of Islanders Athletics to academic excellence and ensuring that our student-athletes earn degrees."
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
