Making Waves: Islanders Athletics releases strategic plan

August 27, 2019

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Athletics has unveiled a strategic plan that raises the bar for Islanders Athletics, Director of Athletics Jon Palumbo announced Tuesday. The plan, titled "Making Waves", establishes a new mission and vision along with a set of core values for the program.

"We are entering an important phase in the history of Islanders Athletics. Our new strategic plan demonstrates a commitment to elevating the overall experience afforded to our student-athletes. In doing so, we will build a culture of success and achievement in competition, in the classroom and in the community. This plan is a key step towards establishing and sustaining a program that delivers a new level of pride for our students, alumni and local community," said Palumbo.

The announcement comes at a time of palpable momentum on the Island Campus and within its athletics program. Under the leadership of Dr. Kelly Quintanilla as she enters her third year as president, the university has seen a renewed commitment to Athletics success as a catalyst for campus and community engagement. Building on the achievements of 20 years of Islanders Athletics, including 36 Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships since 2005, Making Waves raises the bar for a new era of excellence.

"Athletics is a vital component of our institution's efforts to engage our alumni and the local community. Further, a successful athletics program will gain regional and national exposure for our Island University and our entire community. This strategic plan serves as the foundation upon which we will continue to build a strong athletics program focused on excellence and student success," Quintanilla said.

Making Waves establishes six themes that identify and communicate priorities that are significant to achieving Islanders Athletics' vision and mission. Those themes are:

• Student-Athlete Well-Being & Performance
• Championship Culture
• Academic Success and Retention
• Financial Sustainability
• First-Class Facilities
• Campus and Community Engagement

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Athletics consulted with CarrSports and received input from several stakeholder groups including university leadership, coaches, student-athletes, staff, community members and fans. Each of the six themes is guided by a set of core values and contains several goals and metrics to chart progress and accountability.
