Softball splits opening day at UCA

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi softball team split a doubleheader on Friday at Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark.
- The Islanders dropped the first game, 13-2, but rebounded to win the second, 10-5.
- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi moves to 3-11 in Southland Conference play while UCA is now 6-8 in league action.
- Freshman Sammi Thomas hit her sixth and seventh home runs of the season, recording a big fly in each game.

Game One Islander Statistics
- A&M-Corpus Christi scored one run in the fourth on a Thomas home run and added one more in the fifth as Keagan Helson scored on an Emily Vela RBI single.
- Ashley Moss was 1-for-2 with a walk.
- Kennedy Johnson, Ashleigh Sgambelluri and Samantha Burke each went 1-for-2 in the game.
- Vela finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Game Two Islander Statistics
- The Islanders scored two in the first, one in the third, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth. A&M-Corpus Christi had 10 runs on 14 hits.
- Central Arkansas had five runs on 10 hits, scoring one in the first, one in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth.
- Moss reached on a bunt single to start the game and came around to score on a Whitney Wendel RBI single. Kennedy Johnson would single in Wendel in the next at bat to give the Islanders an early 2-0 lead.
- In the third, Moss came around to score on a Thomas double to center.
- Sgambelluri's lead off single in the fourth led to a run as Skye Koehl hit an infield single with two down to put A&M-Corpus Christi up, 4-3.
- Thomas hit a solo shot with one down in the fifth to make it a 5-3 game.
- After UCA came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, 5-5, the Islanders scored five times as Moss, Vela, Thomas, Wendel and Kennedy Johnson all drove in runs. A&M-Corpus Christi batted around, recording five runs on six hits.
- Thomas drove in three runs, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a home run. She scored twice in the second game.
- Wendel was 3-for-4 int he second game with a double. She scored two runs and picked up a pair of RBIs.
- Kennedy Johnson was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
- Koehl had a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
- Kandace Johnson got the win, throwing 5.0 innings of relief. She allowed just one earned run on five hits. She struck out two and walked two.
- Burke went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. She also reached on a walk.
- Moss was 1-for-4 in the second contest with two runs scored. She drove in a run, reached on a walk and stole a base.
- Vela was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Sgambelluri was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
