LUBBOCK, Texas - After setting a pair of program bests in College Station last week, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi continued to rewrite the record book this Friday at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational. The Islanders broke six indoor program records in Lubbock, along with five top-five performances on the afternoon.
"Great weekend of competition here at Texas Tech." commented Head Coach
Brent Ericksen at the conclusion of the day's competition.
"Six school records in one meet never happens and we had one set in each of the sprints, jumps, throws and distance events."
Just seven days removed from her record-setting performance in the Ted Nelson Invitational, thrower
Kaelin Simmons beat her previous mark in the weight throw with a toss 16.19 meters at the start of Friday's competition. The Canyon Lake-native now owns three of the top-four marks in Islander history, while her team-best throw finished sixth place in the event.
Hannah McWilliams had a big day in the field as well, with a clearance of 4.02 in the pole vault. McWilliams' performance tallied the first occasion in women's Islander indoor history an athlete has broken the four-meter barrier, as the senior finished first among all competing collegiates.
Not to be outdone by their teammates in the field, runners
Allyson Girard and
Tashonna Williams would break a pair of records on the track later in the afternoon. In just her second indoor meet since coming to the Island, Girard recorded her second win of the season, and her second addition to the Corpus Christi record book while running a 5:00.46 in the one mile. Williams' 56.54 in the 400m set a new best for her school as well, crossing the finish line in third among all college-attached runners on the day.
The Corpus Christi men would have a historic day as well, with freshman
James Manders crushing the previous Corpus Christi best in the pole vault. Competing for the first time this season, Manders' 4.87m clearance was enough to beat his program's best by over a quarter of a meter, on the way to tying sixth overall in the event.
Â
Three Blue and Green pole vaulters would have career days in all, with athletes Logan Jorgenson and newcomer
Colton Cohea clearing a height of 4.72 meters in the event.Â
Senior
Terrion Spivey continues to improve upon his pace in the 200m on a meet to meet basis, besting the personal record he set the previous week (22.35) with an all-time program best of 22.03. Spivey's performance was good enough claim 11th among a field of 28 college runners, while beating the record pace of 22.17 set by former Islander
David Carrillo in the 2015 Southland Conference Championships.Â
The Islanders have gotten off to a hot start this January, and will look to carry the momentum they've gained from the previous two meets into Houston next weekend. The Blue and Green is set to compete in both days of the Houston Invitational, hosted by U of H, after claiming a pair of podium spots in the same meet the previous year.
