The Blue and Green set new unbeaten streak with shutout of PVAMU

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi continued the course toward its best season in program history with a 3-0 shutout of PVAMU on the road this Sunday. The Islanders victory gives the Islanders their longest unbeaten streak in school history, holding a record of 3-0-1 over their previous four matches. For just the fifth time since the program began Corpus Christi has posted back-to-back wins, as the side will look to tie a record of three straight the coming Friday at Sam Houston State.

The Blue and Green came out firing to start the first half, recording an unseemly eight attempts on net before the host Panthers could record a single shot. Freshman Megan Dodd opened up the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 14th minute, on the way to becoming the first defender to record a goal for the Islanders in 2017. While Dodd's goal would be the only score headed into the half, Corpus Christi recorded an impressive seven shots on net in the opening 45, with their 13 total shots setting a match-high for the Islanders this season. Abbie Flax would be largely untested through the opening term, with the Islander defense holding PVAMU to just a single shot on goal and three in total.

Adding to the Panthers' plight in the second half, junior Reina Cruz would receive PVAMU's first red card of the year in the opening 90 seconds of the period. The hosting side committed a season-high 13 fouls on the afternoon, in comparison to the five free kicks surrendered by the Islanders. With the Panthers playing a man down for the remainder of the matchup the Blue and Green was free to continue its offensive onslaught, posting an additional eight shots in the final 43 minutes of play. With PVAMU unable to mount any offense, freshman Kayla Gove was able to register her first goal of the season during the 70th minute, while fellow freshman Celia Hilsabeck would retrieve her first just 10 minutes later in the 80th.
  • All three of the Islanders' goals were scored by freshmen on the evening, giving Islander freshman a scoring total of seven for the season
  • With nine goals on the year, Corpus Christi is just seven goals away from tying a school single season record, with 10 regular season matches still remaining
  • Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's three goals are the most the team has had in a single contest this season, one short of tying the program record of four set against Lamar in October of 2014
  • The Blue and Green has not allowed a goal against in its previous three contests, accruing a total of 311 minutes without a goal against
  • The Islanders took 21 shots over the course of Sunday's match, with 12 of them reaching frame. That beats the previous season-best of 11 and seven they had against UIW on Friday
  • The Blue and Green's shot total is more than they've had in the last two matches combined
  • Corpus Christi is now just a single win from tying the program-high for a single season set in the 2015 season
  • The Islanders are 6-1-1 when scoring multiple goals in their previous eight contests
  • Abbie Flax' clean sheet puts her in a tie for second-most by an Islander all-time with teammate Jordan Wainwright
  • The Panthers committed a season-high of 13 fouls against Corpus Christi, averaging just six per match coming into Sunday's competition
  • Three of PVAMU's four shots occurred in the first half. The club's four shots and single SOG are season-lows in both categories
COMING UP NEXT
The Islanders return to Southland play next weekend with a pair of road matches at Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin. The Blue and Green went 0-2 against those two squads the previous season, however Corpus Christi enters next week with a better record than both the Bearkats (3-4) and Lumberjacks (4-4).
