CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Ninety minutes wasn't enough time to decide Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Sunday contest with UTRGV, and even after a pair of overtime periods, nothing stood between the two sides and a scoreless draw.Â
The Islanders were hoping to even their season series with UTRGV heading into this weekend, after losing to the Vaqueros 1-0 just two weeks ago. That contest in Edinburg also required extra time, as UTRGV was able to steal a decision in the waning minutes of the second overtime period. Like that match, Sunday's competition was a physical one, as both teams combined for 26 fouls on the night and five yellow cards.Â
The Vaqueros jumped on the Islanders early in the match, outshooting the home side by a count of 5-2 and earning seven corners in the first 45 minutes. Starting forward Kaitlyn Joy had the biggest chance for the Islanders in the opening half, after a UTRGV turnover put the Dripping Springs native alone in front of goal. The visiting keeper was quick off her line however and was able to turn away the Joy opportunity, and prevent the Blue and Green from taking an early advantage.
The Islanders kept the ball to themselves throughout the starting 25 minutes of the second half, registering three shots and forcing the Vaqueros' tender to make a pair of saves. Starting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi keeper
Jordan Wainwright turned away four shots on goal in the second half alone, including two in the final five minutes of regulation. Both sides remained scoreless through 90 and headed to extra time for the second occurence this season.Â
Overtime provided opportunities for both sides, with each club steering a shot on net. Both team's goalies were up to task however, as Wainwright completed her second career clean sheet in a scoreless draw.Â
- All three of the Islanders' yellows came in the second overtime period, with Brooke Erdmann, Joy and Kayla Gove receiving their first cautions of the year
- Wainwright's nine saves are just two short of tying the career-high she set at SMU last year. The senior has allowed just a single goal over two matches after stepping between the pipes for injured keeper Abbie Flax
- Defenders Siri O'Donnell and Alexis Urch are the only two players for the Blue and Green, outside of Wainwright, that were on the field for all 110 minutes of play
- The Islanders set season-highs in fouls (14), corner kicks (7), and saves (9), while tying the five shots on goal they recorded at Texas State
- The Blue and Green's all-time series against the Vaqueros now sits at 1-2-2, as they finish the week 1-0-1
- O'Donnell recorded the first shot on goal of her career in the 82nd minute against UTRGV, while Megan Dodd recorded a career-high two strikes on net
With Friday's result, no points were awarded to either side in this year's rendition of the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. This year's score between Corpus Christi and UTRGV remains at 3-3 with the Islanders' volleyball squad setting to face the Vaqueros this coming Wednesday.
