Islanders Win Inaugural South Texas Showdown
 
2016-17 saw the Islanders establish a new rivalry with UTRGV as the South Texas Showdown Presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union was born.  The rivalry series pits the Islanders and Vaqueros head-to-head in each of the two schools' common sports, with points being awarded to the victor in each matchup.
 
Over the course of the season, the Islanders and Vaqueros met on 27 different occasions in 14 sports as the Blue and Green dominated its rival to the south, earning a 36-21 victory in the series.
 
Men's Cross Country kicked off the Islanders' season-long domination with a win on September 2. Volleyball would add another three points to the Islanders' total with a 3-1 win over the Vaqueros just four days later.
 
In the marquee matchup of the series, men's basketball cruised to a pair of wins, routing the Vaqueros 94-72 in the Valley before rolling 84-68 at home.
 
Once the calendar turned to 2017, the Islanders pulled away, winning 12 of the final 15 contests on the year. With their pair of victories on March 7, Islanders men's and women's tennis clinched the South Texas Showdown for the Blue and Green.
 
The Islanders and Vaqueros will continue the rivalry in 2017-18 with the first meeting set for August 27 as soccer visits Edinburg.
