#6 – Rashawn Thomas and Ehab Amin Shatter Records
Â
Records are made to be broken and that is exactly what
Rashawn Thomas and
Ehab Amin did in 2016-17.
Â
Leading one of the most successful seasons in program history, ending with a run to the CIT finals, Thomas and Amin combined to fell records left and right throughout the year. It seemed every game saw a new record fall as the duo led the Islanders to the most postseason victories in school and Southland Conference history.
Â
A four-year standout, Thomas set 18 different records wearing the Blue and Green. Most notably, the forward earned the top career marks in points, rebounds and blocks during the 2016-17 season while also setting the single season record with 765 points as a senior.
Â
Amin meanwhile dazzled the Island with his defensive prowess, averaging 3.4 steals per game. With a total of 124 steals on the season, the junior led the entire country in swipes. The 124 also marked a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi record and set a new top-mark in the 56-year history of the Southland Conference.
Â
The records fell in quick succession during conference play, sparked by Thomas' 22-point, 12-board night at Lamar in late January. The 22-point effort lifted Thomas past former teammate John Jordan as the program's all-time leading scorer.
Â
A few weeks later, Thomas made homecoming a game to remember when he eclipsed Demond Watts' rebounding record with his 852nd board of his career. Thomas finished the year with 961 as an Islander.
Â
Amin's record-breaking began with a career effort against McNeese, pouring in 31 points while grabbing 15 rebounds. That same game, the junior surpassed former teammate
Hameed Ali for the single-season school record by recording number 92 on the year.
Â
The guard was not done there, pickpocketing opponents another 32 times down the stretch. Amin would break the 20-year-old Southland Conference record with his 119th steal against UMBC in the CIT semifinals.
Â
Following their outstanding seasons, the pair earned First Team All-Southland honors and also picked up NABC All-Region recognition. Â
