WACO, Texas/HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field program participated in two separate meets on Saturday with the distance team and select individuals competing at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight, hosted by Rice, while the rest of the squad ventured to the Michael Johnson Invitational, hosted by Baylor.
In Waco, the Islanders were led by the record-breaking performance of
Aaron Rosales in the hammer throw. For the second time in three meets, the Corpus Christi native topped the school record book, this time breaking his old record nearly two meters with a toss of 49.68 meters.
After another impressive meet at the Texas Invitational last week, the high jumping duo of
Zhafear Ray and
Sashane Hanson notched a pair of top-five performances. Ray placed second in the men's competition at 2.08 meters, which was the seventh best in school history. Hanson came in fourth by clearing the 1.72-meter bar, the fifth highest ever by an Islander.
Ben Clark rolled with a strong outing in the shot put. The junior took seventh at 15.69 meters for the fifth longest throw in program history. Clark now has eight of the 10 best shot put performances in school history.
Hannah McWilliams cleared the 3.91-meter bar for the third best height by any Islander, as she placed 10th.
In the running program,
Chloe Young was 13th in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.32 seconds, good for third all time.
Will Maraggia and
Ebony Collins took home top-10 finishes in the men's 800-meter run and the women's 200-meter dash, respectively. Maraggia crossed the line in 1:53.60 for eighth, while Collins finished her event in 24.31 seconds in eighth, as well.
Taylor Hawes tallied a season best for the Blue and Green in the women's 800-meter run at 2:20.92.
Mason Townley followed suit with a team best 56.86 seconds in the men's 400-meter dash.
At the Duckett Twilight in Houston,
Morgan McCutchen was 12th in the women's 1,500-meter run, while
Vinnie Van Puyvelde came in 11th on the men's side to open the distance races for the Islanders. Van Puyvelde placed first in his heat, and McCutchen was second in hers.
Charlotte Fleming crossed the line in fourth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 11:47.65 topped her previous best by more than 20 seconds.
Jordan Wright notched a 14th-place finish in the men's 5,000-meter run, before
Cynthia Quiroga placed 12th in the women's event, both were personal bests.
Logan Jorgensen took fifth place in the pole vault after clearing the 4.55 meter bar.
