AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field program had a pair of personal bests on Saturday at the Texas Invitational, as high jumpers
Sashane Hanson and
Zhafear Ray notched podium finishes for the Blue and Green.
Â
The Islanders men placed 14th in the meet, while the women took 11th.
Â
Hanson cleared the 1.78-meter bar on her third attempt, setting the school record for the second time this season. The Jamaican international kept her streak of top-three finishes perfect this outdoor season by placing third.
Â
For Ray, the freshman topped 2.12 meters for the first time in his career, as he took third place. Ray's mark was the third highest in program history.
Â
The Islanders had three entrants in the men's 800-meter run.
Will Maraggia finished fifth in a time of 1:51.34, the second quickest time in school history. Behind the junior, a collision on the track slowed down the rest of the pack, as
Jaran Cadena and
Tristan McNeal crossed the line in 15th and 21st, respectively.
Â
In the shorter track races,
Ebony Collins notched the seventh fastest time program history in the 100-meter dash with a season best 11.77 seconds, as she ended up 16th. A short time later, Collins matched her earlier performance with a 16th-place finish in the 200-meter dash at 24.06 second, the fourth quickest in school history.
Â
Diamond Thomas had a strong day in her two events. The Houston native was 12th in the shot put and 18th in the discus.
Ben Clark's throw of 15.69-meters in the shot put was the sixth best in school history. The Spring Branch native finished in 10th on the afternoon.
Â
The Islanders will split the squad up next weekend. The distance program will travel to Houston to compete at Rice for the J. Fredd Duckett Twilight, while the remainder of the team will compete at the Michael Johnson Invitational, hosted by Baylor.
