1971 Tennis, Jaime Landin Headed for Hall of Honor

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Athletics will add a pair of inductees to its Hall of Honor during Homecoming festivities in February. The Islanders will add the 1971 University of Corpus Christi tennis team and former Islander baseball great Jaime Landin to the prestigious Hall in February.

The honorees will be inducted in conjunction with the National Islander Alumni Association at the 2018 Homecoming Honors Banquet on Friday, Feb. 9. The 2018 Homecoming Honors Banquet is open to the public and tickets are now available through islanderalumni.org/store. Tickets begin at $35, with tables of 8 costing $350.

The 1971 tennis team featuring Humphrey Hose, Jorge Andrew, Roberto Chavez, Ken de Koning, Oscar Salas, Marc Boulle and Fredi Oporto, is undoubtedly one of the best teams to ever represent Corpus Christi. Under the leadership of Hall of Honor member Bob Mapes, the 1971 Tarpons made a splash in the squads first year of Division I competition by finishing the season ranked No. 5 in the country.

Led by another Hall of Honor Member in Humphrey Hose, the Tarpons advanced to the NCAA National Championships hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Hose was ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the nation at one point during 1971 and was recognized as an All-American by the NCAA.

Joining the 1971 Tarpon tennis team is former Islanders baseball standout Jaime Landin. The infielder was the first four-year player in Islanders baseball history, playing on the Island from 2002-2005. Landin finished his career with a .427 batting average in his senior season, setting a school record that still stands today.

Landin also holds records in hits with 297 in his career, extra-base hits with 116 and runs scored with 221. All together, Landin still holds top three marks in 12 offensive categories. The former third baseman holds the top two seasons in batting average and the top three single seasons in triples.

Landin went on to play for the Coastal Bend Aviators and made his way into the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Landin earned his MBA from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2008 and now resides in New Mexico where he is a supervisory border patrol agent at the federal law enforcement training center in Artesia.
