Bauer's Effort Not Enough as Islanders Fall to Bearkats

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A pair of second half goals by Sam Houston State countered a game-tying strike from Chayse Bauer of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at the Dugan Soccer Stadium. The Islanders (0-10-0, 0-3-0) dropped the Southland Conference tilt 3-1.

The Bearkats (1-9-1, 1-1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal 31 seconds into the match. A quick combination play on the outside found Allie Johnson at the top of the six-yard box, who finished into the bottom corner.

Sam Houston State had several opportunities to extend the lead in the next 44 minutes, if it were not for freshman goalkeeper Tatum Hightower. The Roanoke native bounced back from the rough start to make four stops in her only half of action, including a pair of saves on breakaways.

Coming out of the halftime break down 1-0, the Islanders matched the fast start by the Bearkats at the start of the game. Three minutes into the second half, Bauer tallied her second goal of the season. Yvette Franco sent a piercing ball through the Sam Houston back line, finding the freshman from Dallas. Bauer fired a first-touch shot from outside the box and into the net, beyond the outstretched arms of Bearkat goalie Anna Kaiser.

A&M-Corpus Christi maintained the lion's share of possession in the final frame, but a pair of counter attack goals for the Bearkats in the 57th and 74th minutes guided the visitors to victory.

Sam Houston State outshot the Islanders 17-to-10 and 8-to-5 on net. The Islanders goalkeepers finished with five saves, four from Hightower and one from second half backstop Kendall Moody.

Franco's assist, her first point of the season, put her in a tie with Meghan Cordero for most assists in a career for a career on the Island. The Corpus Christi native extended her career-point tally to 34, also the most in program history.

UPCOMING MATCH
The Islanders will head out on the road for a pair of games next weekend. On Friday, the Blue and Green face Nicholls at 7 p.m. in Thibodaux, La., before a 1 p.m. kickoff against Southeastern Louisiana.
