Cross Country Competes at Texas A&M Invite

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –  The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams competed at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, as the men's team placed fifth and the women took 11^th.
 
The men placed fifth out of 17 teams in competition.  The host Aggies won the meet, just edging out Kentucky, 33-41.  Southland Conference foes Lamar and McNeese finished ahead of the Islanders in third and fourth place.
 
Jordan Wright led the Islanders for the first time this season, placing 30^th overall with a time of 25:23.0 on the eight kilometer course.  He was followed closely by teammates Marek Spriesterbach and Steven Galli who placed 32^nd in 25:27.2 and 34^th in 25:29.1, respectively.
 
Cesar Gonzalez – this past Monday's Southland Conference Runner of the Week – and Fabian Lutz rounded out the scoring for the Blue and Green.  Gonzalez crossed the line in 25:35.1 to place 39^th, while Lutz was 44^th in 25:44.2.
 
The Islander women were 11^th out of 18 teams in competition.  Rice won the team title, defeating Baylor by just two points, 70-72.  Lipscomb (80), Kentucky (82) and the host Aggies (123) rounded out the top five.
 
As she has every meet this season, Cynthia Quiroga led the Islanders again on Saturday.  The two-time Southland Conference Runner of the Week placed 49^th overall with a time of 22:27.5 on the six kilometer course.
 
Liz Romo and Morgan McCutchen were next to cross the line, placing 56^th in a time of 22:39.8 and 67^th in 22:57.5, respectively.
 
Rebekah Hardee and Carissa Piñón rounded out the scoring for the Islanders.  The former placed 94^th in 23:43.2, while the latter was 101^st in a time of 23:52.7.
 
UP NEXT
The Islanders cross country teams will take next weekend off before heading to San Antonio to compete at Incarnate Word on Oct. 8.
