Men Record Perfect Score in Showdown at UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas –  The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's cross country team scored a perfect score to defeat UTRGV in a dual meet in Edinburg as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
 
Led by Fabian Lutz's first place overall finish, the Islanders put their first five runners across the line before a Vaquero was able to finish the race.  Lutz won the five kilometer race in a time of 15:32.62.
 
Lutz was followed by Marek Spriesterbach (15:41.36), Cesar Gonzalez (15:42.29), Vinnie Van Puyvelde (15:43.83) and Steven Galli (15:47.50) to earn the Islanders the perfect score – winning 15-44 – and garner two points toward the overall tally in the South Texas Showdown.
 
On the women's side, the Vaqueros were able to get the better of the Islanders, winning 24-31, and earning two points for UTRGV on the Showdown scoreboard.
 
The Islanders did have success on the individual side of things as Cynthia Quiroga won the race by over 13 seconds. The San Antonio native finished the 3,200 meter race in 11:29.29 to come away with the victory.
 
UTRGV picked up second through fifth place to lead them to victory.  Morgan McCutchen (6^th, 12:12.77), Carissa Piñón (7^th, 12:15.55), Liz Romo (8^th, 12:17.39) and Rebekah Hardee (9^th, 12:20.90) rounded out the scoring for the Islanders.

The Islanders will next compete at Rice on Friday, Sept. 9.
