Martinez, Douvier Earn NABC Honors Court Recognition

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –  Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball student-athletes Bryce Douvier and Cole Martinez were honored for their achievements off the court on Tuesday, receiving National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court recognition for the 2015-16 season.

It marks the second straight year that Douvier and Martinez have collected the honors from the NABC and the third in a row that an Islanders duo was named to the Honors Court.  Jake Kocher and James King received the accolades in 2013-14.

In all, it's the fifth straight season that the Islanders men's basketball team has been represented on the list, starting with head coach Willis Wilson's first year on the Island Campus. Kennon Dvorak earned the honors in both 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Douvier graduated this past May with a 3.45 cumulative GPA, earning his degree in communications from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.  The Sedgwick, Kan., native also earned Second Team Academic All-Southland Conference for his achievements during the 2015-16 campaign.

Douvier averaged 10.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as a senior for the Islanders. He finished his career sixth all-time with a .396 three-point shooting percentage, fourth with a .797 free throw shooting percentage and ninth with 417 career rebounds.

Martinez finished his undergraduate studies this May and is currently pursuing his Master's degree at the Island University. Studying kinesiology, he holds a cumulative GPA of 3.59.  The San Antonio native sat out last season and returns for 2016-17 for his fifth year with the Islanders.

Both Douvier and Martinez were a part of the first back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Blue and Green since 2007 and the Islanders' 25 victories this past year were the second most ever, trailing only the 26 wins from the 2007 Southland Championship squad.

The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that honorees possess off the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.  In order to be named to the Honors Court a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria.

  1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
  2. Cumulative grade points average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the academic year.
  3. Matriculated at least one year at the current institution.
  4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, II or NAIA Division I or II institution with an NABC member coach.
