VICTORIA, Texas – An early 8-1 deficit proved too much for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as UH-Victoria claimed a 9-5 win over the Islanders Wednesday night.
The Islanders (9-14) surrendered four runs in each of the first two innings to dig the insurmountable hole. For UH-Victoria, the win marks the first time the Jaguars have ever defeated A&M-Corpus Christi.
Right fielder Andrew Gross led the charge for the Jaguars with a 3-for-5 day at the plate and four runs batted in. Third baseman Mitchell Matulia added three RBI, all coming on a home run to left in the bottom of the second inning.
A&M-Corpus Christi tried to mount a rally in the middle innings, sparked by a 2-run home run off the bat of center fielder Zack Gibson. The long ball was Gibson's second of the season and cut the lead to 8-3.
The Islanders added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, getting RBI from Dawson Yates and Zacarias Hardy to pull within three. That would be as close as the Islanders came, however, as UH-Victoria tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth and closed out the 9-5 win.
Freshman Aaron Hernanadez (1-3) took the loss on the mound for the Islanders, allowing the four runs on six hits in the first.
