Still Undefeated, Islanders Topple UTSA

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Off to one of its best starts in program history, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team shutout UTSA, 4-0, for the second time this season to improve to 8-0 on the season.

With the 8-0 start, the Islanders are just one win away from matching the best start to a season of 9-0, set back in 2013.

DOUBLES STAY PERFECT

Just like their record, the Islanders remained undefeated in doubles play by taking wins at No. 2 and No. 3.

The all-senior duo of Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin tore off a 6-0 win on court No. 2. The Spaniards knocked off Nicole Karaklis and Alena Shickova to improve to 6-1 on the season.

UTSA rebounded at the top spot to even the doubles point at 1-1. Jelena Dzinic and Judit Vives could not recover from a slow start, falling 6-1 to the Roadrunners.

With the doubles point hanging in the balance, all attention turned to court No. 3. There, the Islander duo of Hortense Boscher and Alexandra Belle rallied from an early hole to defeat their Roadrunner opponents 6-3. With the win, Boscher and Belle improved to 6-0 on the season.

RODRIGUEZ SPARKS SINGLES

It didn't take long for senior Celia Rodriguez to make the Islander lead 2-0. The veteran improved her singles record to 8-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 to open singles action.

The Islanders would climb within a point of sealing the victory when Vives closed out her match in two sets. The junior rallied from an early first-set deficit to win that set 6-2. Vives then went on to clinch point No. 3 for the Islanders with a 6-1 second set.

Kerry Galhos would clinch the match at No. 6, defeating Karaklis 6-2, 6-2. With the win, Galhos improved her record to 4-0 on the season.

Maider Martin had rallied from a first set loss to take a 7-6 (7-0) win in the second when the match was left unfinished. Dzinic held a second set lead in her match after taking the first 7-6 (7-3) while Hortense Boscher was down a set when the match was clinched.

With the three singles wins to clinch the match, the Islanders improved their singles record to 35-2 on the season.

UP NEXT

The Islanders hit the road this weekend as the Blue and Green head to Natchitoches, La., to take on Air Force in a neutral site matchup before opening Southland Conference play against Northwestern State on Monday.
