Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas State pitching staff held the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi from stringing together multiple hits on Wednesday afternoon. With three runs coming on two-out base hits, the Bobcats completed the season sweep of the Islanders with a 5-0 victory.
RELATED: Box Score
For just the fourth time this season, the Islanders (11-13, 1-12 Southland) were held to less than five hits, as Bobcats starting pitcher Randi Rupp collected her nation-leading 14th win of the year.
Texas State (20-7, 1-2 Sun Belt) gave Rupp the lead in the third inning. In the top half, second baseman Kelli Baker singled up the right side for her fourth RBI of the series.
The Bobcats hurler faced the minimum after the first eight Islanders came to the plate before Savannah Sandoval. For the second time in as many days, the Magnolia native bested Rupp with a slow chopper back to the circle. Sandoval beat out the throw on an infield single for her second hit of the series.
Islanders starting pitcher Colleen Bentke allowed second run in the fourth inning on a two-out single up the middle from Kimberlin Naivar. The College Station native was then the beneficiary of some unfortunate luck in the fifth.
After recording two quick outs, a walk, followed by an error at third, put two on base for Taylor Webb. The sophomore scored the pair with a double down the right-field line to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
The double proved to be the last pitch from Bentke, as head coach
Stephanie Hughes elected to replace the freshman with junior
Liz Carter. Bentke finished the day allowing three runs and walking two in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Carter cruised in her final two innings, with the exception of an unearned run scored on a passed ball. The Austin native notched four strikeouts and gave up two walks.
Despite putting two runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, including base hits from
Cosette Hernandez and
Mackinzee Griebel, the Islanders could not advance a runner beyond second.
Paige Williams came on in relief of Rupp for the final three innings. The junior scattered two hits with one walk.
The Islanders fell to 11-15 all time against Texas State at Chapman Field.
