We are so excited for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to host the 50th annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions. H-E-B has been such a grand sponsor for us for 50 consecutive years, that is an amazing show of support from H-E-B. This tournament was started back in 1966 by H-E-B founder Howard E. Butt, Sr. himself and we are proud to continue this great tradition in Corpus Christi.
As in the past, this year's tournament will be played at both the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center and the H-E-B Tennis Center. Friday will consist of the first two rounds of action with the first round at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 4:30 p.m. Saturday will see the 50th champion crowned in the final at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary by welcoming the Texas Longhorns to Corpus Christi as our #1 seed. The Longhorns are currently ranked as the #15 team in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Islanders have won the H-E-B Tournament of Champions twice, with both coming in the past four years. Returning as the defending champions, the Islanders claimed last year's edition by defeating Louisiana-Lafayette 4-1 in the finals. In 2013, the Islanders claimed their first title at the event, defeating Middle Tennessee and BYU, who were both ranked in the top 35 nationally.
In this season's tournament, the Islanders will open against South Alabama at 9:30 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
It is a privilege to host such a grand event. This is considered by many to be the most prestigious college team tournament in America and is the longest-running at 50 years in-a-row. It is an honor for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and an honor for the city of Corpus Christi to host this tournament.
