CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A new era in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball will begin in 2016 as Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby announced Thursday the hiring of Steve Greene as the fourth head coach in program history.
"I'm really excited about this opportunity," Greene said. "I'd like to thank Scott Lazenby and [senior woman administrator] Mary Wallace for everything they've done throughout the process. I'm looking forward to being the Islanders' head coach and running the program. I'm truly excited to get to Corpus Christi and get going."
A press conference to introduce Coach Greene will be held Thursday, Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m. at the Dugan Wellness Center.
"I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet the team as well," Greene continued. "They're very eager to continue on their path of success and win more championships. I'm also excited about the new beach program beginning this spring and looking forward to our first competition."
Greene comes to the Island from Texas A&M, where he was an assistant coach for six seasons. While with the Aggies he primarily worked with the setters and served as the program's recruiting coordinator.
In each of the last four seasons Texas A&M has had a setter earn AVCA All-America honorable mention honors, and this past season Greene mentored Stephanie Aiple to SEC Player of the Year accolades.
In 2014, Greene's recruiting class was ranked as the 17th best in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. With Greene on staff, the Aggies have advanced to the NCAA Tournament every year and surpassed the 20-win plateau four times.
"Steve Greene's success as a coach with indoor volleyball and his experience with coaching beach volleyball will be a tremendous asset to our volleyball program," Lazenby said. "We are excited to welcome him, along with his wife Alyson and son Darwin, to the Islander family."
Before his time in College Station, Greene spent two years as an assistant coach at both Houston Baptist and Cal State Monterey Bay.
Greene also has prior head coaching experience. He started the volleyball program and served as head coach at Saint Francis High School in Watsonville, Calif., before moving on to become the head coach at Notre Dame High School in Salinas, Calif. for three seasons.
Just in time for the Islanders' first season of beach volleyball, Greene has spent time coaching in the sand as well. He was the head coach for the Main Beach Volleyball Club from 2001-05.
A former player himself, Green was the setter and team captain at Irvine Valley College from 1997-98 and 1999-2000. He earned a degree in kinesiology from CSU Monterey Bay in 2008.
