"It's a hard one to explain," Head Coach Willis Wilson said. "Stephen F. Austin did a nice job on their home court of pushing us out. We had some stretches that missed shots really affected us negatively."
The Lumberjacks (18-5, 11-0) took a 25-24 lead late in the first half and never relinquished it, leading the second half wire-to-wire. SFA extended its lead to as many as 14 points before finishing with the 70-58 victory.
The Islanders (18-6, 9-3) were handed their third Southland Conference loss of the season, two of which have come against league-leading Stephen F. Austin. The Blue and Green shot 50.0 percent from the floor Saturday, but were less effective from beyond the arc (23.1%) and the free throw line (53.8%).
With 13 points and 14 rebounds, Thomas picked up the 20th double-double of his career, which is now tied for the second most in program history. He also added two assists, one steal and one block, but turned the ball over six times.
The Islanders finished the game with 17 total turnovers to just 11 for the Lumberjacks. SFA came into the game leading the nation in turnover margin and proved why in front of its home crowd.
The Jacks shot 43.2 percent from the floor and 36.0 percent from three-point range, as Demetrious Floyd carried the load offensively. The sharpshooter finished 6-of-11 from long distance for 22 points.
Joe Kilgore led the Islanders with 15 points on 7-of-9 from the floor and added four rebounds. Bryce Douvier went for 13 points and recorded a game high four steals.
