UCA Offense Too Much for Islanders

Story Links

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Central Arkansas forward Camille Bassett recorded a hat trick on Sunday afternoon, as Southland Conference leaders Central Arkansas powered passed the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team, winning 6-2. The Islanders (2-13, 2-6) saw seniors Kallyn Redona and Yvette Franco continue their Senior Weekend celebrations with a pair of strikes.

"I think we were in a fog of emotion from Friday night's game," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "We just couldn't get going into the flow of the game. The second half, I think we did a much better job against a very solid team. It's tough when you've put yourself in a hole.

"The positives we will carry with us into next week's matches are there. Not giving up and scoring two good goals to end the game, we can build on that. Heads are up and we are focused on each day's preparation to continually get better."

The Bears (12-3-1, 7-0-1) tallied a trio of goals on either side of the halftime break.

A&M-Corpus Christi  broke up the shutout in the 72nd minute. Redona sent a free kick from just inside the midfield line on net, catching the underside of the crossbar and bouncing over the line for her second career goal.

Three minutes from time Yvette Franco added her third score of the season. Shayla Spearman flew down the left side of the field and sent a low cross to the top of the six-yard box where Franco finished passed wrong-footed UCA goalkeeper Lauren Mercuri.

Central Arkansas outshot the Islanders 16-to-6 and 12-to-5 in attempts on goal. A&M-Corpus Christi goalkeepers Jordan Wainwright and Kendall Moody split six saves with four and two stops, respectively.

The Islanders hit the road next week with a match at Lamar on Friday at 7 p.m., before a 1 p.m. kickoff at McNeese on Sunday.
