COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A trio of school records were broken as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field teams competed in their first meet of 2016 on Friday. The women placed fifth and the men took seventh out of 14 teams at the Texas A&M Team Invitational.

"It was a good start to the season," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said on Friday. "There were plenty of individual performances to be proud of, but we will continue to work to improve as the season continues."
Freshman Sashane Hanson picked up the Islanders lone win on the day, topping all others in the high jump with a mark of 176m/5-07.25. In her first collegiate meet she set a new A&M-Corpus Christi school record.
Sophomore Chloe Young also set a school record on the women's side, crossing the line in 9.07 second during the preliminary round of the 60 meter hurdles. She qualified for the finals and placed seventh in the event.
The Islander women earned a majority of their 44 points in the 5,000 meters, taking second, third and fifth place in the event. Carissa Piñón led the way with a time of 18:25.98, Cynthia Quiroga was next in 19:12.71 and Linda Garcia rounded out the top five in 20:25.12.
Regina Salinas earned bronze medalist honors in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:30.81, while Taylor Hawes was eighth in the one mile run, crossing the line in 5:21.31. Adrienne Nickleson was the final top-10 performer on the day, taking fifth in the shot put with a mark of 13.18m//43-03.00.
It was Benjamin Clark who set a new school record on the men's side, recording a new best mark of 12.98m/42-07.00 in the weight throw. Clark placed 15th in the event and was one of nine top-10 performances for the men, taking 10th in the shot put with a distance of 14.15m/46-05.25.
Like the women, the men also proved themselves in the 5,000, taking second, seventh and eighth. Fabian Lutz led the way with a time of 14:55.26, while Cesar Gonzalez and Daniel Guerrero followed in 15:51.15 and 15:56.14.
Philipp Baar took second in an event as well, earning silver medalist honors in the 3,000 meters. The senior crossed the line in 8:21.29. Teammate Vinnie Van Puyvelde was right on his heels, placing fifth in 8:25.90.
Steven Galli, a sophomore, added a seventh place finish for the Islanders. He recorded a time of 4:16.72 in the mile. Finally, Angelo Garland was just half a second from breaking his own school record in the 400 meters, placing fourth in 48.92 seconds.
The Islanders will be in action next when they host a dual meet against UT-Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, Jan. 23.
