Thomas led the Islanders to a pair of wins over Central Arkansas and McNeese State to open up conference play. The Blue and Green are now 11-3 overall, extending their program-best start to the 2015-16 season.
There have been nine Southland Conference Player of the Week awards handed out this season and Thomas has been on the receiving end of four of them. No other player – and maybe more impressive – no other team in the league has received more than one such honor.
Thomas averaged 20.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game against the Bears and the Cowboys, while shooting 60.0 percent from the floor and 88.9 percent from the free throw line. His 28-point, 11-rebound performance against McNeese was his fourth double-double of the season.
A native of Oklahoma City, Thomas now leads the league in rebounding with 8.6 boards per game and is second in the Southland with 17.9 points and 2.2 blocks per outing.
Senior Brandon Pye also earned recognition for his play this week. The guard was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com. Pye averaged 21.0 points per game and knocked down eight three-pointers.
The Islanders look to continue their winning ways Monday night at Lamar. A&M-Corpus Christi tips off with the Cardinals at 8 p.m. with coverage on the American Sports Network and the Southland Digital Network. Live audio will also be available on the Islanders Digital Network.
