Edinburg, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's cross country team started their 2015 season with a victory at the UTRGV Relays on Friday.
The men entered the race ranked 13th in the NCAA South Central Regional rankings and proved they deserve the accolades with a win 19-31. The six runners for the Islanders finished in the top-seven positions, led by Steven Galli, who finished in first place with a time of 15:35. Places three through seven went to the Islanders in order, Jordan Wright, Daniel Guerrero, Edgar Martinez, Cesar Gonzalez and Paul Delgado.
The women finished in their closest race in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi school history in a meet against UTPA or UTRGV. The Islanders women defeated UTRGV 26-29. Regina Salinas picked up a first-place finish with a time of 18:47. Liz Romo finished in second, followed by Carissa Piñón in fifth and Shelby Polasek in sixth. Linda Garcia came across the line in 10th place. It was the third closest finish in women's history. The Islanders defeated TCU in the Sam Houston State Invitational by one point and won the Texas A&M Invitational over Rice by two points, both in 2003.
The Islanders will return to competition next weekend for the Rice Invitation in Houston Texas next Friday (Sept. 11).
