Tulsa, Okla. - For the first time in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi school history, an Islanders golfer carded an ace in an official competition. Dani Bergmann recorded her first career hole-in-one on Tuesday in the third round of the Bob Hurley Oral Roberts Shootout. The Schwabmuenchen, Germany, native sent her tee shot at the 140-yard, par-three, fifth hole into the cup for the only ace of the tournament.
"She had a perfect shot from the tee," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "The pin was tucked behind a bunker, so we didn't actually see the ball go in the hole. We heard it hit the pin, but had no idea if it went in the cup or ricocheted off the green. Dani walked on the green and looked down to find her ball for the school's first hole-in-one."
Bergmann and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team shot a 25-over, 313, in the final round to finish the tournament at in 10th place with a 67-over, 931.
"I was pleased with how we competed this weekend," added Blackmar. "Having Vanessa back in competitions is a huge bonus for us. The rest of the team looks up to her leadership on the course."
Vanessa Johnson bounced back with birdies at the fifth and ninth after a double-bogey at second to finish her front nine at 1-over. The senior would shoot 2-over on the back nine to card a 3-over, 75. In her second tournament after a redshirt year, Johnson finished tied for third at four-over par.
Bergmann tied for 26th place after a 5-over, 75, took her total score to 15-over, 231, for the tournament. Ana Paredes finished the event tied for 43rd, after the San Antonio, Texas, native carded a 9-over, 81, in the final round.
Julia Dereniwsky capped her tournament with a 12-over, 84, to finish tied for 69th at 30-over, 246. Anna Millet-Esteve carded her first scoring round of the year with an 8-over, 80, to finish in 79th.
Sam Houston State won the team title at 43-over, 907, two shots ahead of runners up South Dakota. Stephen F. Austin rounded out the top-three with a 50-over, 914. Sam Houston State's Heather Shake posted a 2-over final round to win the individual title at one-under, 215.
The Islanders will play next week in Huntsville, Texas. Sam Houston State will host the Harold Funston Invitational at Raven's Nest Golf Course. A&M-Corpus Christi finished fourth last year, as Paredes posted a five-over tournament to finish in fifth place.
