Top Performance #3: Ebony Collins' Record Setting Hour At Southland Conference Championships
Ebony Collins produced a memorable 2015 track and field season. The junior entered the 2015 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with eight top-10 finishes in individual events during the year, including two first-place performances. Collins' progression throughout the season led to improved times at every meet. On day three of the Championships, she continued that trend.
The San Antonio native had already posted the fastest time in the preliminary round for the women's 200 meters, before she stepped into the blocks for the final and waited for the start. 23.99 seconds after the starting gun, Ebony Collins was a Southland Conference champion, and posted the second sub-24 second 200 meters in school history. However, celebrations had to wait, as the 100 meters started in less than an hour.
The previous day, Collins matched her personal best with a time of 18.86 seconds in the preliminary round to secure the fifth seed in the finals. In the finals, the Islander sprinted to a second-place finish to secure her second All-Southland honor for the meet. Collins shaved .26 seconds from her preliminary round time to post the first sub-11.60 second 100 meters in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi school history.
Collins' performance in the 100 and 200 meters at the 2015 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships qualified her for the NCAA Division I West Regional, where she set another Islander record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.53 seconds.
