CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior reliever Jacob Dorris of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team has signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Astros organization. Dorris completed his career as the Islanders' all-time leader in both saves and appearances.
Dorris had a strong senior year to wrap up his stellar tenure as the top closer in program history. He appeared in 28 games out of the bullpen, going 1-2 with a 3.32 ERA. He posted 10 saves on the season, totaling 50 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings of work. He closed his career with a bang, appearing in all five Islanders games in the Southland Conference Tournament, including saves in the wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State.
The Weatherford, Texas, native burst on to the scene for the Islanders as a sophomore after a standout performance in summer baseball the year prior. Dorris set a new school record with 13 saves in 2013, going 1-2 with a 2.36 ERA and striking out 33 batters in 26 2/3 innings. He followed that up with a junior campaign that saw him save 10 games in making a school-record 33 appearances on the year.
The sidearming righty set new school records in both appearances (101) and saves (31) in his three years as a closer. He also totaled 148 strikeouts, a total that is good for seventh on the Islanders career list.
