Belicek Selected by Braves in 16th Round

CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior left-handed pitcher Trevor Belicek has been selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 16^th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He is the second-highest draft pick in Islanders history.

Belicek was selected on day three of the draft, going to the Braves with pick number 480. Among Islanders, only Daniel Minor, who was chosen 279^th overall in the 2012 Draft by the Astros, was selected earlier than Belicek. 

Belicek had a tremendous senior season for the Islanders, earning First Team All-Southland Conference honors after going 9-5 with a 2.87 ERA. He was among the national leaders in strikeouts for much of the season, with his 111 punchouts currently 22^nd in the nation and his 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings ranking 12^th. He allowed batters to hit just .217 against him for the season.

His finest outing came against Nicholls, where he outdueled fellow draftee Grant Borne in a 4-0 victory. Belicek allowed just one hit and one walk, striking out 12 without allowing a runner past second base. He also tallied 13 strikeouts against Stephen F. Austin, and came up big for the Islanders in earning a win against Southeastern Louisiana in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament.

Belicek wrapped up his career as the school's all-time leader in both strikeouts (258) and wins (23). He holds a career 3.44 ERA in 56 career appearances and 40 career starts. He tossed a total of 274 1/3 innings in his Islanders tenure, and was a Second Team All-Southland selection as a sophomore in 2013.

A pair of Islanders signees – Ike Schlabach (19th round) and Chris Falwell (29th) – were selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and will have until July 17 to decide whether to sign with the Pirates or come to the Island University.
