Mowatt Advances to Quarterfinals, Collins Shatters School Record at NCAA West Prelims

AUSTIN, Texas – Junior Ebony Collins and freshman Kemar Mowatt competed today at the 2015 Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Mowatt has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 400-meter hurdles while Collins set a new school record in the 100-meter dash.

"Kemar was solid from the start and looked really good," Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan said. "Ebony had a tremendous start and ran her lifetime best, which was a big improvement from last year."

Mowatt started the evening for the Islanders in the men's 400-meter hurdles and clocked a time of 51.49 to place second in his heat and 11th overall to advance to the quarterfinals. He is slated to run at 7:45 p.m. Friday evening for a spot in the Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 10-13.

Mowatt advanced to the West Preliminary Round after putting together a remarkable rookie season. The native of Kingston, Jamaica qualified in the 400-meter hurdles after posting a school-record and personal-best time of 51.13 to place third at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

On the women's side, Collins wrapped the evening in the opening round of the 100 meters with a personal-best and school-record time of 11.53 to finish fourth in her heat and 29th overall. She improved her previous mark of 11.59 set at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.  

Collins returned to the preliminary round for the second time in her career after making an appearance last season in the 100 meters. She improved her finish this season after clocking a time of 12.11 last season to finish 44th overall and sixth in her heat.

This season, the San Antonio native earned a first-place finish in the 200 meters and a second-place finish in the 100 meters at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

Collins will compete again Friday at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the 200-meter dash. She holds the school record in the 200 meters with a time of 23.93 and garnered first place in the event at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
