CORPUS CHRISTI – Junior Ebony Collins and freshman Kemar Mowatt are headed to Austin, Texas to compete in the 2015 Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round on Thursday, May 28 through Saturday, May 30. Collins will compete in the 100 meters and 200 meters while Mowatt will run in the 400-meter hurdles at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

"Both Kemar and Ebony have been looking good and have improved their times at practice, so we are cautiously optimistic," Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan said. "We have been to Austin before for the Texas Relays, so hopefully it will go well, and if so, we have the national meet in two weeks in Eugene."
Collins returns to the preliminary round after qualifying last season in the 100 meters. Since then, she has improved in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. The San Antonio native highlighted the women's team with two impressive performances at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
She earned a first-place finish in the 200 meters and a second-place finish in the 100 meters on the final day of competition. She set a school record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.59 to help the women's team earn an eighth-place finish, their best finish since 2012.
Collins became the first Islanders' woman to earn a Southland title in a sprinting event after earning a first-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.99. She also became the first Islander to place in the top two in the 100 meters in program history. She shattered the school record in the 200 meters at the Baylor Invite this season with a time of 23.93.
Last season in the preliminary round, Collins finished 44th overall in the 100 meters and sixth in her heat with a time of 12.11.
Mowatt will make his first career appearance in the West Preliminary Round after putting together a remarkable rookie season. The native of Kingston, Jamaica qualified in the 400-meter hurdles after posting a school-record and personal-best time of 51.13 to place third at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. He shattered his previous best of 51.50 set the day before in the preliminary round.
