AUSTIN, TEXAS – The No. 53 ranked Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team put up a tough battle against No. 9 Texas today, but came up short, 4-0, in non-conference action at the Westwood Country Club. The Longhorns (18-3) notched a tight doubles point before winning three close singles matches.
"I was proud of our effort today," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "This was a highly competitive match as you can see by the scores. Texas is one of those elite teams with the level to win a national championship, and we came into Austin and put up quite a fight."
The Islanders (14-6) and Longhorns battled back and forth early on in doubles action until Nick Naumann and Michael Riechmann rallied past the duo of Paul Cook and Mitchell Cook, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. Texas then garnered the doubles point after the tandem of Kevin Bettendroffer and Guillaume Rauseo came up short, 6-2, to Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff at No. 2 doubles. The freshman-senior pair of Arthur Bedel and Peter Nagy was leading the No. 19 ranked pair of Soren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool, 4-2, when the point was clinched.
Texas carried over their momentum into singles play to clinch three close matches. Junior Javier Pujol fell to Clement Homs, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, while junior Ricardo Mayagoitia came up short 6-2, 6-1 to Goldhoff at No. 3 singles. Texas then clinched the match after UT's John Mee defeated Bedel, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 slot.
When the match was clinched, Bettendroffer was headed into a third set with No. 45 ranked Berkowicz at No. 2 singles. Bettendroffer fell 6-3 in the first set before bouncing back to win 6-2 in the second set. In the No. 4 slot, Rauseo secured a 6-4 first-set win over Naumann and was trailing 5-2 in the second set.
At No 1 singles, No. 94 ranked Nagy went neck-and-neck with No. 44 ranked Glasspool in the first set before Glasspool edged out a 7-6 (5) first-set tiebreaker win.
The men's team will return home to host Texas-Pan American on Tuesday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
