Dance Team Readies for NDA Collegiate Championships in Daytona Beach

CORPUS CHRISTI – For the third straight year the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders Dance Team is headed to Daytona Beach, Fla. to compete in the 2015 National Dance Alliance (NDA) Collegiate National Championships. The squad is set to compete in the preliminary round of the Dance Open Division I on Thursday, April 9, at 1:17 p.m. EDT in the Peabody Auditorium.

"We are so excited about competing again in Daytona," head coach Melanie Lowry said. "The girls have worked extremely hard on this routine and we can't wait to put it on the floor at nationals."

The Islanders will be performing their old world contemporary jazz routine that they learned from scratch in October of 2014. The routine features 14 of the Islanders and they are hoping to improve on last year's program-best score that awarded them the Challenge Cup title. The Islanders earned the title with a program-best 9.313 score out of 11 teams.

This year the competition is stronger with 25 teams competing for one of the 14 spots in the finals. The Islanders will be performing second on Thursday in the preliminaries behind Xavier University.

This is the largest championship in the world for collegiate dance teams. The finals will be held on Friday, April 10. For more information on the championships and the coverage click HERE.

"We can't thank our sponsors enough for helping us get to Daytona," Lowry added. "Special thanks to Mike Fitch, Ricardo Vargas, Andrea Estrada, Marisol Barrientos, Eduardo Barrientos, Clint and Nancy Tworek, Jose Rojas, Laura Betancourt, Shane Evans, Javier Rivero, Samantha Blair, Candy Searcy and Midtown Corpus Christi."
