SINGLES/DOUBLES SELECTIONS
CORPUS CHRISTI – For the second time in his career, senior Peter Nagy has been selected as one of 64 participants to compete in the 2015 NCAA Singles Championships.
"It's a great honor for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to have a player representing our school at the NCAA Tennis Championships," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "This is an extremely high-level event and it's just a great honor. Nobody deserves it more than Peter.
"Peter is simply one of the most driven, disciplined, highly motivated guys I have ever coached in 21 years. He has changed his body with his extreme work ethic and discipline. I believe he will play pro tennis for 10 years."
Nagy, the three-time Southland Conference Player of the Year is currently ranked No. 101 in the ITA singles rankings. He has lost just three dual-matches this spring and has collected an 18-3 record in the No. 1 slot, including three wins over ranked opponents. In Southland play, he posted a 5-0 record in No. 1 singles and dropped just one set in a combined 11 sets in conference play to earn his fourth first team honor.
The native of Budapest, Hungary earned his highest ITA singles ranking of his career at No. 70 on March 24 and was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week three times this season and nine times in his career. In the fall, he reached the finals of an ATP Pro Future.
Nagy made history in 2013 becoming the first player in program history to compete in the NCAA singles draw. Then No. 88 ranked Nagy faced No. 57 ranked Malte Stropp of Mississippi State and dropped a tough 6-2, 6-1 loss.
Nagy will head to the NCAA Team Championships just one career win shy of matching Associate Head Coach Goncalo Figueiredo's program-best 67 wins. Nagy and the rest of the men's team received the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Cal on Friday, May 8, at 10 a.m. in Austin, Texas in the opening round.
The individual singles and doubles competition is slated to start on Wednesday, May 20, at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Nagy's opponent will be announced at a later date.
"I am so excited for us to watch Peter battle in the final two events of his senior year," Moore added. "He is one of the greatest competitors you will ever see."
