Men's Tennis Remains Undefeated in SLC Play, Downs ACU 5-2

ABILENE, Texas  – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi No. 57 ranked men's tennis team clinched their fourth straight Southland Conference match tonight with a 5-2 victory over Abilene Christian (9-16, 1-4 SLC) at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.  

The Islanders (15-6, 4-0 SLC) came out strong to secure the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The duo of Ricardo Mayagoitia and Paul Cook defeated Paul Domanski and Marco Bensley, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles before the freshman-senior duo of Arthur Bedel and Peter Nagy edged Guilherme Gesser and Nico Agritelley, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles to clinch the point.

A&M - Corpus Christi kept the momentum rolling into singles play to build a 3-0 lead. Mayagoitia downed Henry Adams, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles before sophomore Kevin Bettendroffer garnered his sixth straight match at No. 2 singles. He topped Jason Proctor, 6-2, 6-2 to give the Islanders their third point of the day.

The Wildcats got on the board after junior Guillaume Rauseo fell 6-2, 7-6 (2) to Agritelley at No. 3 singles. However, No. 97 ranked Nagy clinched the match for the Islanders at No. 1 singles with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. He clinched his fourth straight match while improving his career mark in Southland singles play to 19-1. Nagy is now just three career wins shy of matching Associate Head Coach Goncalo Figueiredo's program-best 67 wins. 

Junior Javier Pujol padded the Islanders lead to 5-1 after cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 5 slot over Domanski. In the final singles match of the day, P. Cook came up short 6-2, 7-6 (3) to Bensley in the No. 6 spot.

The men's team will now head to San Antonio to face Incarnate Word on Saturday, April 18, before teaming up with the women's team on Sunday, April 19, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center for Senior Day. The women will host Incarnate Word while the men will take on Texas-Pan American. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m.
