CORPUS CHRISTI – John Jordan scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds to become the only active player in Division I with at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists in his career, and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the Southland Tournament with a 58-27 win over Abilene Christian on Saturday.
The 27 points allowed were the fewest surrendered in Islanders history, as was ACU's 18.8 percent shooting for the game. The Wildcats were just 6-for-41 (.146) over the game's final 35:04. Bryce Douvier led the Islanders with 11 rebounds, while Rashawn Thomas added 11 points, six boards and three blocks. Jordan dished out six assists as well, and finished the contest with exactly 1,500 points and 500 rebounds to go along with his 630 dimes in his four years. Austin Cooke led ACU with nine points.
The Islanders will now head to the Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will earn a first-round bye. They will first take to the court on Thursday, March 12, in the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, when they will face the winner of the No. 6/No. 7 game the day before. A&M-Corpus Christi started the game a little tentative from the floor, and the two teams traded points to a 7-6 ACU score at the 15:04 mark. But at that juncture, the Islanders defense locked down, holding the Wildcats without a point for the next 9:35, embarking on a 13-0 run to take a 12-point lead. In that span, the Islanders held the opposition to 0-for-8 from the field with six turnovers, registering a total of 14 straight stops.
Meanwhile, on offense, Dale Francis drilled a three and Ehab Amin scored a pair of buckets in transition, including a steal and dunk at the 6:47 mark that made it 17-7. Thomas also did strong work at the line, hitting all four of his attempts to help the Islanders take a 19-7 lead.
The teams then traded baskets to a 21-11 score, but Brandon Pye knocked down a three on a brilliant pass from Thomas and later the sophomore added two more at the line to send the Islanders to the break up 26-11. The 11 points allowed in a half were the fewest since allowing 11 at Lamar last year on Feb. 1.
The teams traded points out of the locker room to a 28-13 score, but the Islanders defense then held ACU without a basket in its next 17 shots, and the Islanders offense went on a 20-2 run to push the lead to a game-high 33. Seven different Texas A&M-Corpus Christi players scored in the rally. Jordan added the exclamation point, knocking down a three with 7:43 left that gave him 1,500 points on the nose.
A&M-Corpus Christi brought in its bench players, but left Jordan as he searched for the final two rebounds. Finally, a Parker Wentz jumper caromed off the rim at the 2:43 mark and Jordan came down with it for rebound number 500. Coach Wilson immediately called time out to allow the Houston native to receive a standing ovation on his senior day.
From there, the Islanders were able to come away with the 58-27 victory. The mark eclipsed the school record for points allowed, topping last season's 35 allowed to Lamar on Feb. 1. The nine field goals allowed were also the fewest in school history.
