CORPUS CHRISTI - After rain washed away Saturday's scheduled game with Southeastern
Louisiana, the Islanders baseball team got back out on the field Sunday in the series finale. The Islanders dropped the series finale to the Lions, 8-3.
It was a game that offered a steady barrage of offense, not enough for Islanders fans though, as the Lions outhit the home squad 14-8 on the day. Timely hits in the first inning gave SLU its first lead at 3-0.
After a leadoff groundout, SLU's Jacob Williams ripped a ball into left center for a double. After an infield single to third base, Kevin Carr's bunt attempt was misplayed by the Islanders as he reached and advanced to second on an error. Brett Hoffman would bunt in a run, before the second error of the inning would allow another run to cross the plate.
A&M-Corpus Christi (10-10, 2-4 SLC) would answer the Lions bats in the second with two runs. In his fourth start of the year, Zacarias Hardy started the scoring rally for the Islanders in the second with a single up the middle. Frankie Salas then picked up a single to right to move Hardy to third. Brett Burner would pick up his second hit of the year against a left-hander as he drove in Hardy to put the home team on the scoreboard. Casey Thomas would finish the scoring in the inning with a single up the middle to make it 2-0.
The bats would go cold for the Islanders through the middle innings as Southeastern would keep chipping away at sophomore Devin Skapura on the mound. The Lions picked up single runs in both the fifth and sixth.
Salas would round the bases in the seventh to give the Islanders their third run of the game. It would be Salas' second run scored of the day. The junior first baseman started the inning with a walk and advance to second on a wild pitch. Salas later scored on a fielders choice.
The Islanders made 11 total errors over the course of the series, and had made only 17 over the course of their 17 games prior.
Southeastern's (19-7, 7-2 SLC) starting pitcher Kyle Cedotal came into the contest boasting a 1.11 ERA and a 2-1 record on the year. The junior southpaw went eight complete innings, giving up eight hits and three runs.
The Islanders used five pitchers throughout the contest, with Skapura going five and a third innings and taking the loss. The Kingwood, Texas native allowed five runs on the day, only three of which were earned.
Kevin Landgrebe was brought into the game in the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs. The senior induced the uncommon 6-2-3 double play.
Both Thomas and Justin Perales picked up two hits on the day.
The team will continue Southland Conference play this weekend as they host Stephen F. Austin in a three-game set starting Friday.
