Men's Basketball Falls as Jordan Sets Career Scoring Mark

Box Score

HOUSTON – John Jordan scored 18 points to become the Islanders' all-time leading scorer, but a late second-half surge by Houston Baptist lifted it past the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team, 77-66 at Sharp Gym.

Jordan passed Chris Daniels (2003-07) for the career scoring mark, giving him 1,410 points in his Islanders tenure. He also holds the school record for assists, free throws and minutes, and is two away from the school mark in steals.

Jordan and Rashawn Thomas each scored 18 and grabbed seven rebounds, while Jordan added six assists, two steals and a block. No other player finished in double figures for the Islanders, though Joe Kilgore had a strong game off the bench, going 4-for-4 from the field for eight points.

Anthony Odunsi led all scorers with 22 points, 12 of those at the free-throw line, while Colter Lasher added 16 and Josh Ibarra poured in 10. The Huskies shot 49 percent from the field and won the battle of the boards, 40-27.

Early on, the two teams traded blows, with HBU building a 13-8 lead on the strength of six points from Ibarra and a three from Ricmonds Vilde. After a Bryce Douvier answer, the teams went back-and-forth to a 17-13 Huskies advantage. Thomas then sparked a 10-2 run with a putback dunk, as five different Islanders scored baskets during the rally. More important, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held HBU without points on five of the six possessions in the run that saw the visitors take a 23-19 lead.

HBU was able to answer, and the Islanders lead shrunk to 29-27 with 2:26 left. But a Huskies technical foul gave Brandon Pye two free throws and Jordan followed with a jumper to make it 33-27. An HBU turnover then led to a thunderous dunk by Jordan for a 6-0 run and an eight-point lead. But the Huskies responded, scoring the final six points of the half, the final three on a Lasher triple from the right wing that sent the teams to the locker room with the Islanders ahead 35-33.

Out of the break, the teams traded points to a 37-35 score, but the Islanders followed with a 7-0 run coming off a three for Pye, a steal and dunk for Jordan and two free throws from Thomas. The Islanders then pushed the advantage to 48-42 at the 12:46 mark. But HBU put together a 7-0 run of its own to gain a 49-48 lead after a Cody Stetler layup at the 10:25 mark. The lead never was greater than one for either team over the next three minutes.

A Lasher layup pushed the HBU advantage to three, and the Huskies would push the lead to four after an Anthony Odunsi free throw at the 4:43 mark. The Islanders then cut the lead to one after a Thomas free throw and a Pye jumper made it 62-61 with 3:37 to play. But HBU got a huge three from the corner out of Marcel Smith on the ensuing possession to push the lead to four and two Odunsi free throws made it a six-point game.

The Islanders were able to get it down to four with 1:03 to play on a Jordan jumper that gave him the career points record. From there, the Huskies repeatedly got to the line and cashed in, and the Islanders could not get any closer as HBU pulled away in the final minute. The visitors went just 2-for-8 down the stretch while HBU was able to go 22-for-27 at the line in the second half.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they take on Stephen F. Austin. The Islanders and SFA will play a doubleheader, with the women's game slated to start at 1 p.m. and the men to follow at 3:30. Both games will be televised on ESPN3 with Lincoln Rose and Van Chancellor on the call.
