Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Three Islanders scored in double-figures as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team picked
up its 11th win of the year and seventh Southland Conference victory, defeating Sam Houston State, 63-50, Saturday afternoon.
A&M-Corpus Christi was led by Shay Weaver who scored a team-high 16 points while Camesha Davis and Olivia Fouty each scored 14 as the Islanders led from start to finish at the Johnson Coliseum.
The second half was a much more contested contest than the first half as the Bearkats (6-15, 5-6 SLC) opened by scoring eight of the first 10 points to cut the lead to four points at 30-26 and seize a bit of the momentum from the Islanders.
C. Davis answered on the offensive end with a tip-in layup to break the scoreless streak. Kassie Jones then followed with layup on the other end, before junior Gee Lawler made her presence felt in the paint scoring back-to-back buckets for the Islanders.
Fouty, a transfer senior, scored seven points in each period on her way to picking up her 1,000th career point. Fouty grabbed five rebounds, two blocks and two steals on the day.
A&M-Corpus Christi could not have asked for a better start to a game. In control from the opening tip to halftime, the Islanders held the Bearkats to 18.5 percent (5-of-27) shooting in the first half. With a total team defensive effort, AMCC was able to hold the Southland Conference leading scorer, Shernise Robertson, to just five first-half points and 1-of-7 shooting.
Camesha Davis had her best first half of the season as she put in 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. The 6-foot-1 forward nailed two 3-pointers on her way to scoring seven of the teams first 10 points.
A&M-Corpus Christi led by as many as 18 in the first half, up 28-10 with 3:45 remaining. The home squad was able to end the half on a 6-0 run though, cutting the lead to 12 at 28-16 heading into the locker room.
The Islanders shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the field while holding SHSU to 32.1 percent (18-of-56). A&M-Corpus Christi also connected on five shots from outside and dished out 16 assists. Junior Jennifer Ramirez setup the Islanders to score on eight occasions.Lawler finished with four points and three blocks.
AMCC returns home on Thursday when they play host to the Privateers of New Orleans. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at Stripes Court at the American Bank Center.
