CORPUS CHRISTI - Casey Thomas finished 3-for-5 with four RBI's as the Islanders baseball team defeated UT Arlington 12-9, to pick
up its sixth win of the year.
The Islanders (6-2) used a four-run eighth inning highlighted by Kyle Danford driving in the go-ahead runs on a two-out single. Thomas drove in two runs prior to Danfords's at bat on a double to right field.
There was no shortage of offense as both teams collected double-digit hits with the Islanders notching 19 and the Mavericks with 16 on the day.
A&M-Corpus Christi trailed 3-0 early as UT Arlington (3-5) took advantage of the windy conditions as Garrett Harris had trouble finding the strike zone in the first coupe innings, issuing three walks.
In the third, the Islanders scored four runs to take the lead over the visiting Mavericks. Thomas picked up his first triple of the year as he drove in two runs. Tyler Ware singled through the right side in the next at bat, scoring Thomas from third. Junior Justin Perales finished things off with a single that scored Ware to closeout the outburst.
The Islanders and Mavericks traded runs midway through the game, with two coming in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Senior Kevin Landgrebe tossed the final two innings for the Islanders as he picked up his second win of the year in relief, allowing just one run in the outing. G. Harris went four innings allowing five hits and four runs as he struck out six on the day.
Jacob Moreland took the loss for the Mavericks, allowing the go-ahead runs in the eighth, falling to 0-1 on the year. UT Arlington's Chad Nack went five and two-thirds innings, and allowed six runs.
Six Islanders finished with two or more hits with Frankie Salas leading the way with four. Thomas, Ware and Danford ended with three, while Brett Burner and Perales finished with two.
The Islanders will be back in action Saturday when they take on UT Arlington at 2 p.m. at Chapman Field. They will wrap up the series Sunday when they play a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Game two is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
