CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team shot an opening-round 325 to sit in a tie for eighth through the opening round of the Islander Classic. Monday's action was shortened from two rounds to one due to blustery conditions at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
"It was really unfortunate that the worst weather day we have had in about a month came for the opening round of the tournament," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "I was proud of the way our team battled through the elements, though, and showed some pretty good toughness. We have ourselves in position to improve tomorrow, and our young team continues to make strides as we look to peak in two months at the conference championship."
Julia Dereniwsky led the way for the Islanders with a 77 to sit in a tie for 11th place individually. Sophomore Ana Paredes delivered an 82, while freshmen Anna Millet-Esteve and Nagisa Miura each fired an 83. Olivia Lowe rounded out the scoring for the Islanders with an 84.
Lamar leads the team competition after shooting 307 in the first round, with conference foe Sam Houston State close behind at 309. Central Arkansas sits in third following a 312, while Stephen F. Austin fired a 314. Eastern Kentucky rounded out the top five with a 321.
SHSU's Sarah Black fired a 73 to lead the individuals, while Redlands Community College's Ivon Reijers sits just one shot back at 74. Eastern Kentucky's Nicki Henry fired a 75 while playing as an individual to place third. Seven different players shot 76 to sit in a tie for fourth place.
The second and final round of the Islander Classic will tee off at 8:15 with a shotgun start. The Islanders will commence play on holes 7-9 and will be paired with Butler and McLennan CC. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
