Women's Basketball Fall To Stephen F. Austin, 74-62

Box Score

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team fell to Stephen F. Austin, 74-62, at the American Bank Center Saturday afternoon. Junior Jennifer Ramirez finished with a career-high 16 points in the loss, while Shay Weaver finished with a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Islanders (12-12, 8-5 SLC) trailed by as many as 26 points in the contest, but chipped away to make it a 13-point game with 3:58 left in the game, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the home squad ran out of gas and break within 10-points.

SFA's Porsha Roberts could not be stopped throughout the game. The senior finished with a game-high 32 points and eight rebounds on the day. It seemed as the Islanders chipped away at the lead, Roberts would steadily have an answer on the Lady Jacks (17-6, 10-2 SLC) offensive possessions.

Stephen F. Austin could do no wrong in the first half, nor would they miss from the charity stripe. The Lady Jacks shot 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free throw line and 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the field along with three first-half treys compared to the Islanders to take a 41-29 advantage into the locker room.

Ramirez scored four of the first six points for the home squad as both squads could not miss during the opening minutes of the game. The Islanders offense went stagnate though, as the Lady Jacks reeled off an 18-5 run to take command of the game over a six-minute period midway through the opening period.

As the Islanders scored, SFA answered what seemed like every time down the floor with Roberts, the Southland Conference's third leading scorer. Roberts led the Lady Jacks with 12 points in the opening frame while Tierany Henderson connected on SFA's only 3-pointers in the period.

Camesha Davis scored 11 points and grabbed seven boards, while Olivia Fouty added six in the loss.

The team will make its final road trip of the year beginning Wednesday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Abilene, Texas to take on Abilene Christian followed by a trip to San Antonio to face off with Incarnate Word Saturday.
