LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team dropped a 4-2 loss today against East Tennessee State on a windy day at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. The Islanders (3-2) will have a quick turnaround as they take on No. 36 Texas Tech on the Red Raiders' home court tomorrow.
The Buccaneers garnered an early lead after securing the doubles point on courts two and three. The sophomore duo of Kevin Bettendroffer and Paul Cook fell to the duo of Ismael Merino and Robert Herrera, 6-1, in No. 2 doubles before freshman Arthur Bedel and junior Mitchell Cook lost a 6-0 match to Sebastian Yllera and Conner Huertas at No. 3 doubles. The senior-junior tandem of Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo were ahead 3-2 in No. 1 doubles against Rogerio Ribeiro and David Biosca when the point was clinched.
ETSU (2-6) padded its lead to 3-0 after Herrera topped P. Cook, 6-4, 6-0 in No. 6 singles and Bettendroffer dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Ribeiro at No. 2 singles. The Islanders got on the board after Ricardo Mayagoitia secured a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Yllera at No. 3 singles for his second win of the season. Nagy then cut the Bucs lead to one after downing Biosca 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles for his fifth consecutive win. ETSU clinched the match at No. 5 singles after Javier Pujol suffered a tough three-set loss to Merino. The junior sealed the first set, 6-4, before falling 6-2 in the second set and 6-3 in the third. In the final singles match of the day, Rauseo and Huertas split the first two sets and Rauseo was trailing 6-5 when the match was clinched.
The Islanders will now take on the Red Raiders who are ranked No. 36 in the ITA national rankings with a 9-2 record.
Texas Tech has a trio of singles players ranked in the top 125 of the ITA rankings with Felipe Soares (35), Hugo Dojas (111) and Joaln Cailleau (125) all in the rankings. In doubles, the pair of Dojas and Soares will enter the match ranked No. 22 while Soares and teammate Connor Curry are ranked No. 59.
