"I thought in the first quarter we took it to them as the aggressor," head coach Royce Chadwick said after the game. "We had some good things out of our press. In the second quarter, we began to tire and made some substitutions, and we didn't keep up the same momentum.
"We had way too many fouls. There were way too many times when we got out of position and hand-checked them. I thought we had a run going in the second half, but we gave up an offensive rebound and allowed them to hit a couple of threes that let the air out of us."
The Islanders (3-7) ended the first quarter with a 15-10 lead, behind five points from Shola Adebayo and Gee Lawler. Brittany Mbamalu connected on her only 3-pointer of the first half with 4:16 remaining, which would be the last points for the Islanders in the second quarter, as the Rams (5-7) rode a 14-3 run into the break.
Hannah Missry went 4-of-9 from behind the arc and Samantha Clark's six points and 10 boards gave Fordham the momentum to pull away in the second half.
Kre'Ana Henry connected on her first 3-pointers as an Islander in an attempt to cut the Fordham lead, but Missry matched the junior-transfer's efforts in the ensuing possessions.
A&M-Corpus Christi was outrebounded for the third consecutive game, 40-26. The Islanders will bring their turnovers per game average down after committing 18 against the Rams.
Camesha Davis led the blue and green with six rebounds, but her efforts were limited to just 13 minutes by three fouls early in the first half. Foul trouble for the Islanders put the Rams at the line 17 times in the first half.
The Islanders will play Wednesday at 1 p.m. against the New Mexico State, who fell to Vanderbilt in the second game.
