CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi opens it final week of home volleyball matches Tuesday evening as the Islanders welcome Houston Baptist to the Island.
The Islanders swept the Huskies in the first meeting of the season back on Oct. 3 in Houston. After a 25-20 first set, the blue and green cruised to the sweep with 25-15 and 25-16 sets to close out the match.
At 12-0 in the Southland Conference, A&M-Corpus Christi holds a two-match lead on second place Central Arkansas with four matches to play. The Islanders will have a chance to clinch the regular season title with a win over Central Arkansas on Saturday.
THE OCTOBER MATCH
• Morgan Carlson had a breakout performance with a match-high 10 kills, hitting .438 on the day.
• Kelsee Felux added eight kills to the attack while Ivy Baresh chipped in another seven.
• Middle blockers Brittany Gilpin and Madeleine Doud had five kills apiece.
• The Islanders held HBU to a .114 hitting percentage, forcing 19 errors in 88 attacks.
• Jessica Wooten led the way for the Huskies with her nine kills while Blair Gillard added another seven along with Bailey Banks.
• The Huskies committed eight service errors in the match.
HUSKIES TRENDING UP
• The Huskies enter Tuesday's match at 7-5 and in fourth place in the Southland standings.
• After starting the year just 2-4 in conference play, the Huskies have won four of their past five Southland matches.
• Houston Baptist is home to the third-best setter in the league in Kayla Armer. Armer has 954 assists on the season for an average of 9.94 per set.
• Wooten continues to lead the Huskie attack, producing 321 kills this season to average 3.24 per set.
• Wooten also leads the Huskies with 276 digs on the season, one of four players with over 200 digs this season for HBU.
SATURDAY SHOWDOWN
The Islanders will play their final match of the season in Dugan Wellness Center Saturday afternoon as Central Arkansas comes to the Island. A&M-Corpus Christi will honor its four seniors prior to the matchup with the Sugar Bears as the Islanders look to clinch the Southland Conference regular season championship.
