Huntsville, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team wrapped up competition at the Bearkat Women's Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Club hosted by Sam Houston State. The Islanders finished in fifth place following a 24-over, 308, final round. Vanessa Johnson secured her second straight top-5 finish with a tie for fourth place with a 7-over, 213.
"It was nice to be in the hunt and give ourselves a chance to win a tournament," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "We put ourselves in a position to compete at the top of the leaderboard. Unfortunately, it didn't go our way, but this tournament will serve as a building step as we progress to the next event."
Final Team and Individual Results
Johnson carded a 3-over, 74 to lead the Islanders for the third tournament this year. Ana Paredes, who scored the second hole-in-one in school history yesterday, shot a 7-over, 78, to finish in a tie for 25th, along with teammate Julia Dereniwsky, who recorded a third round score of 5-over, 76.
Dani Bergmann rounded out the scoring for A&M-Corpus Christi with a 9-over, 80, to bring her total score to 18-over, 231 to tie for 29th place. Olivia Lowe shot a 15-over, 86, to finish the tournament in 77th.
Ace Alert
Paredes' hole-in-one yesterday marked the second time this season that the Islanders have carded an ace. Last week at the Bob Hurley Oral Roberts Shootout, Bergmann picked up her first career hole-in-one.
"Ana's tee shot yesterday went exactly as she planned it," added Blackmar. "The green had a slope to the right of the hole. Ana placed the ball perfectly on the green and watched it release into the cup. It was much more subtle than Dani's shot last week that went directly into the hole."
What's Next
The Islanders will have a nearly a three-week break before playing in another tournament. The next event on the schedule will be the Pat Bradley Invitational at Lakewood Ranch Country Club hosted by Florida International.
