Huntsville, Texas – For the second time in Islanders history, and the second time is as many weeks, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team carded a hole-in-one. Junior Ana Paredes drained her tee shot on the par-3 17th at Raven Nest Golf Club, host of the Bearkat Women's Invitational. The Islanders finished day one at Sam Houston State's fall tournament in third place, following a 36-hole total of 35-over, 603.
In their morning round, the Islanders shot 13-over, 297, as the four scoring players carded sub-80 rounds to finish in second place. Vanessa Johnson and Julia Dereniwsky finished the first round tied for eighth at 2-over, 73. Freshman Dani Bergmann was 5-over heading into the afternoon round. Paredes rounded out the scoring with a 5-over, 76, including her ace.
Houston Baptist was the leader in the team division after the morning round with a 3-over, 287. Brook Johnson of HBU shot a 3-under, 68, to lead the field going into the second round.
The afternoon round provided a tougher test for A&M-Corpus Christi. Johnson carded an identical 2-over, 73, to finish the day tied in sixth. Bergmann added one shot to her morning tally to end the first day with a 36-hole total of 9-over, 151.
Paredes matched her score from the early round to finish tied for 23rd. Dereniwsky will start day three tied in 32nd after her 10-over, 81, in round two.
Olivia Lowe was the fifth competitor for A&M-Corpus Christi, finishing tied for 77th on day one with a 33-over, 175.
HBU maintained its lead through round two with a 25-over, 593. Heather Shake of Sam Houston State, who won the ORU Shootout last week, will begin day two with the lead at 1-under, 141.
The Islanders will wrap up the Bearkat Women's Invitational on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m with a shotgun start.
