Box Score NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball saw its four-game winning streak come to an end as it fell to Stephen F. Austin, 65-55, at Johnson
Coliseum Saturday evening. With the loss the Islanders drop to 10-10 overall and 6-3 in Southland Conference play.
Junior Shay Weaver paced the Islanders with 21 points on the night, connecting on 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Jennifer Ramirez tied a career-high with 11 points and five rebounds and was the only other Islander to reach double figures. Senior Olivia Fouty added six points and eight rebounds in the loss.
A&M-Corpus Christi trailed by as many as 18 points with under six minutes left, but cut the lead to eight on a Weaver running layup with 1:42 remaining. SFA's Taylor Ross answered on the other end with a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach.
Turnovers were the story of the game, with the Islanders giving the ball up 27 times in total. The Lady Jacks turned the Islanders miscues into 26 points. The Islanders shot 45 percent (18-of-40) in the game, compared to SFA's 38.3 percent (23-of-60).
AMCC led 17-13 with 7:06 left in the first half, but Stephen F. Austin (13-6, 6-2 SLC) reeled off 10-straight points to take a 23-17 lead. Junior Ashanti Plummer broke the scoreless streak with a pair of free throws at the 3:55 mark. The Lady Jacks shot the ball 20 more times than the Islanders, taking advantage of the Islanders' turnovers.
A&M-Corpus Christi played solid defense throughout the half, holding SFA to 31.3 percent (10-of-32) shooting. Southland standout Porsha Roberts scored the Lady Jacks first four points on her way to an eight point, seven rebound first half, while Ross scored a team-high 15 first half points. Ross connected on 7-of-9 from the free-throw line in the opening period as the duo combined for 23 of the teams 30 points at halftime.
Ross finished with a team-high 19 points while Roberts narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Islanders will travel to Houston Feb. 5 when they take on the Huskies. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
