Box Score NEW ORLEANS - Olivia Fouty led the Islanders as she scored a career-high 21 points in the teams
58-46 win over New Orleans Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena. With the win, A&M-Corpus Christi improves to 9-9 overall and 5-2 in Southland Conference play.
"I thought we were inconsistent throughout the game, but we had a run in the second half where we played like ourselves," said head coach Royce Chadwick. "We've been on the road since Wednesday and I think it was a very difficult test for us. You want to be able to go on the road and get two wins and that's what we did."
Fouty paced the Islanders in the first half, scored in the paint and behind the arc. The 6-foot forward also grabbed 11 rebounds to pick up her ninth double-double of the year.
Sophomore Kassie Jones added 12 points and four assists in her second-consecutive start. The Lufkin, Texas product was key during a second half run that extended the Islanders' lead to 19 points.
New Orleans (2-14, 0-7 SLC) started the second half on a 6-2 run, cutting the Islanders lead to just three points at 26-23. It was all Islanders following the Privateers run. Jones scored eight of her 12 points during a 20-4 run to closeout the game for A&M-Corpus Christi.
"Kassie had two huge 3-pointers for us," noted Chadwick. "During that stretch she hit those shots and it began to open things up for us. We didn't shoot it very well in the first half and we gave up way too many offensive rebounds and she really helped us when we needed it most."
Neither team was able to get going offensively in a first half, as both the Islanders and New Orleans combined for 21 turnovers. A&M-Corpus Christi was still able to take a 24-17 lead into the locker room, though. The Islanders were able to turn the Lady Privateer turnovers into six points.
Jennifer Ramirez was able to run the offense through New Orleans' pressure defense. The junior set up several easy baskets, including both 3-pointers by Jones. She finished with five points and four assists.
Fouty, a senior from Toledo, Ohio scored 11 first half points for the Islanders to go along with eight rebounds. Camesha Davis narrowly missed her third double-double in an eight point, 10 rebound performance. Junior Shay Weaver scored eight points in the win.
As a team, the Islanders shot 42.9 percent (21-49) from the field, while the Lady Privateers were held to 23.8 percent (15-63).
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot just 13-of-27 from the free-throw line on the night, a place in which the team had excelled at as of late, ranking third in the Southland Conference in the category.
